Course Features & Benefits

System for Learning and Development (L&D) Excellence

The course is designed in a way that facilitates your internalization of the System for Learning and Development (L&D) Excellence (i.e. Preparation → Participation → Review & Reflection).

Trusting the process and embracing the System for Learning and Development (L&D) Excellence not only enhances your learning experience in the course but also equips you to excel in business meetings by applying the same principles of preparation, participation, and reflection.

Additionally, this system fosters your growth as a more effective professional, instilling lifelong learning skills that empower you to stay at the forefront of management theory and practice.

Please see the Course Design section below for additional insights on how the System for Learning and Development (L&D) Excellence is applied in this course.

Learning Teams

Learning Teams are small groups of learners (approximately five members per team) who collaborate throughout the course to enhance their learning experience.

In this course, everyone joins a Learning Team. Individuals are responsible for preparing before class Sessions so they can forge close bonds while collaborating with their Learning Team members to complete assignments during and after most class Sessions.

The purpose of a Learning Team is to simulate real-world team dynamics, create a supportive network for academic and professional growth, and provide a hands-on opportunity to learn how to work effectively within a group to achieve common goals. Along the way, Learning Teams can make learning more social, joyful, and fun—strengthening motivation and deepening engagement.

Accordingly, Learning Teams serve as a platform for practicing key skills such as collaboration, communication, problem-solving, and decision-making—critical abilities for future leaders.

Weekly Pacing for Business-Building Momentum

Equivalent to a semester-long MBA-level course—including self-paced onboarding and pre-work in March—the Entrepreneurship course runs from April through July, with weekly class Sessions. This weekly pacing gives you time to learn new tools, apply them right away, and steadily build your business idea with your team.

Certificate of Completion / Certificate Policy

In principle, this course is a certificate course and people who successfully complete the course will receive a Certificate of Completion.

In this course, participants who successfully complete the course and earn a Certificate of Completion have accomplished the following:

  • ATTENDANCE: Attended and actively participated in a minimum of 9 Class Sessions.
  • POINTS: Earned a minimum of 60% of the points available in the course.

Course Design

This course is designed to guide learners through a System of Learning and Development (L&D) Excellence: Preparation → Participation → Review & Reflection.

The essence of the learning process is indicated in the columns below.

  • Read the Assigned Reading(s).
  • Take the online pre-class quiz to reinforce your understanding of the assigned readings.
PARTICIPATION →

Lecture → Experiential Exercise

  • Be mindful, pay attention.
  • Actively listen to the lecture and ask good questions.
  • Actively participate in the Experiential Exercise with the members of your Learning Team.
  • Be kind to yourself and to others!
REVIEW & REFLECTION
  • Review your notes, your Learning Team’s summary of the results of the experiential exercise, the lecture slides and the assigned reading(s).
  • Reflect and complete a journal entry describing your key takeaways from the Lesson.
Relevance

In this course, learners engage in a dynamic sequence of readings, lectures, and team-based experiential exercises to learn about and practice the key activities of entrepreneurship: generating business ideas, articulating business concepts, designing business models, and crafting go-to-market strategies. Every element of the course is intentionally designed to mirror the real-world challenges of launching and leading new ventures.

Additionally, the course brings to life the Knowing–Being–Doing approach to Human Capital Development:

Rigor

The Entrepreneurship course is intentionally rigorous and you and your Learning Team will need to dedicate significant time outside of class to maximize your opportunities to learn.

The course is designed for use in MBA Programs and—although the Center does not offer degree-granting Programs and Courses or issue credits—the Entrepreneurship course is the functional equivalent of a 3-credit hour course.

To support the learning process, we leverage world-class content from Harvard Business School Publishing, highly structured lesson plans, and clearly defined deliverables. Our Learning Management System (LMS) uses rubrics to align assignments with feedback, assuring a seamless learning experience.

Consistent with best practices, we intentionally nudge learners out of their comfort zone and into their learning zone. While this can feel uncomfortable, it is an essential part of the learning process. The reward for pushing through the discomfort — an improved ability to generate business ideas, articulate business concepts, and search for a business model — is an essential skill for entrepreneurial managers.

Finally, the level of rigor in this course is reinforced by the opportunity to submit a Mid-Term Short Paper after Session 06, and a Final Deliverable within two weeks of the final class Session. Although Mid-Terms and Finals are rarely included in Executive Education offerings, at the Center we believe that all learners become more emotionally invested in the learning process when opportunities to consolidate and crystalize learning are made available.

Admissions

Cohorts, Sections, and Learning Teams

Cohorts, Sections, and Learning Teams are common features in full-time and executive MBA programs, and they are designed to foster collaboration, peer learning, and networking.

The Entrepreneurship course organizes learners into Cohorts. Each cohort is a group of learners with a shared primary goal. Currently, the Entrepreneurship course has two Cohorts—Aspiring Entrepreneurs Cohort (AEC) and Entrepreneurs Cohort (EC)—which are described briefly below and in detail further down the page.

The maximum number of learners in a Section of Entrepreneurship is 45. Cohorts with a larger than anticipated number of qualified applicants might be separated into multiple Sections (e.g. Section A, Section B, etc.). If this occurs, applicants will be informed of their assigned Section and the days on which it meets at the time the offer of admission is made.

Each admitted learner joins a Learning Team in their Section and progresses through the course as a member of their Learning Team.

Aspiring Entrepreneurs Cohort (AEC)

Aspiring Entrepreneurs Cohort (Section A: Monday Evenings) – Professionals with a strong commitment to lifelong learning who want to learn about entrepreneurship because they might launch their own business “someday.”

Entrepreneurs Cohort (EC)

Entrepreneurs Cohort (Section A: Friday Evenings) – Entrepreneurs, Innovation Managers, and Family Business Successors who have launched a business and would like to use the course to help bring order to their process as they search for a business model.

Number of Participants per Section of a Cohort

For each Section of a Cohort of the Strategy course, we admit up to 45 qualified applicants through two application rounds subject to the policies described below and on a space-available basis, so we encourage you to submit your application by the relevant deadline to maximize your chances of admission.

Admissions Policy

Our Admissions are selective and criteria-driven; specifically, we consider

  • how well an applicant matches the description of their target cohort as indicated below;
  • willingness to commit to the System for Learning and Development (L&D) Excellence;
  • willingness to invest significant amounts of time in reading and preparing;
  • motivation to experience an MBA-level course designed to global standards of learning excellence;
  • professional and educational achievement;
  • and English language proficiency.

Note 1: In some cases applicants may also be requested to complete an online interview as part of the application process.

Note 2: You will need to provide your LinkedIn profile URL as part of the application; if you do not have a current, updated LinkedIn profile, we encourage you to create and/or update your LinkedIn profile before you begin the application.

Self-Assess Your English-Language Proficiency Level

As part of the application process, applicants must accurately assess their English language abilities in the Application Form using the scale below. Many non-native English speakers have successfully completed previous implementations of this course. However, if your current English language abilities are not at the level of 4 or above, you should take a different course.

  • (6) Native-level: Native English language speaker.
  • (5) Fluent: Ability to communicate very fluently and precisely in complex situations in English.
  • (4) Business Proficient: Ability to interact with a degree of fluency and communicate on a wide range of subjects including in a professional context in English.
